When it comes to recycling, Devon is one of the best performing counties in the country with a rate of over 55%.
With our help, this figure is improving every year but inevitably, non-recycled waste still has to be dealt with and that usually means going to landfill.
We operate landfill and material recovery at sites in Torrington and Kennford, both highly regarded by the Environment Agency for the way they are run. Landfill at Kennford only takes inert waste such as soil, stone and hardcore, which is all screened and crushed to minimise environmental impact.
Our Torrington site handles 85,000 tonnes of commercial and household waste every year. We have made significant investment in establishing a large network of gas piping throughout the site to remove methane gas produced by the waste, turning the site into a renewable energy centre with 2MW of installed gas extraction capacity enabling us to generate enough electricity to power 4,000 local homes with green energy.
As both landfill sites are progressively landscaped and restored to grassland we continue to manage each individual part of each site, whether it’s capped or in use, and extract gases that can be sold to the National Grid from our energy plant.
Not all our sites are landfill sites. With 6 sites around Devon, they all have their own uses.
