All your skip questions answered
We have put answers to all the typical skip related questions in our FAQ's section below, if you don't find the answer you were looking for please contact us.
You need to establish exactly how big a skip you need and what it is you want to fill it with. We offer several different options so, have a look through the dimensions chart and roughly how many black bin bags they will hold, and this should give you a good idea as to which is best for you. (Just remember, the black bin bags is an approximate and will depend on what you are filling the skip with)
When you fill your skip you need to remember you can only fill it level with the top of the skip as this is a legal requirement. Our drivers aren’t able to take the skip if it is loaded beyond this point. Using boards around the side of the skip is also a no no and an attempt to increase the skip’s capacity is illegal.
So, to prevent any of this and to make use of the space you have, we would recommend that you break these down into smaller bits (if possible). If you know that you are going to be filling your skip with large items, we would recommend that you over estimate the size of skip you may need so that you don’t have to hire a second one.
Once you know what size skip you need, you now need to make sure you have somewhere to put it. Ideally the skip would be sited on private property such as a driveway or off the road. If not don’t worry… have a look below.
It’s worth a note: a standard skip lorry requires a minimum of 10ft (3.3metres) width to gain access, regardless of what size skip you have ordered.
If you aren’t able to place the skip on private property or there isn’t enough room for the skip lorry, then you have the option of placing the skip on the road or a grass verge outside the property.
For us to do this, your local council must first give permission. As this is the case we will send out one of our guys to have a look as to where you want to put the skip. Once they and you are happy with the location, we will send off the application for the permit and let you know what the verdict is.
Inevitably all councils charge for the privilege. This is charged to you at £70 ex VAT.
Council permits can take between 1 and 5 working days to obtain, and the application period varies dependent on your location. This delay needs to be taken into account when deciding on the dates for hiring a skip.
If you site your skip on the road it MUST have a light at each end and traffic cones. This means it is clearly visible to motorists at all times. In most instances we are able to provide these - this will be confirmed at the time of order.
Now that you know what size skip you require and where you want it sited, it is important to consider what you are going to fill it with.
Some skips are not suitable for some waste types. You need to establish what waste you will be putting in the skip… will be heavy waste? (e.g. soil, brick, hardcore, rubble, etc), or light waste? (e.g. timber, metal, cardboard etc).
As a general rule, any skip larger than 8 cubic yards is NOT suitable for heavy waste types as the lorries cannot lift larger skips filled with heavy waste. If you are in any doubt please give us a call.
Certain types of waste CANNOT be placed in general waste skips under any circumstances.
There are many other types of hazardous waste. If in doubt, please give us a call and one of our team can help you out.
Before completing your order, you need to make sure you know how long you need it for. On average we will need our skip back after 2 weeks.
Once you are finished with it, just give us a call and we will aim to collect it from you at a suitable time for you.
If you know you need the skip removed on a certain day make sure you tell us when you order the skip.
So there you have it. When you order your skip make sure you plan ahead to get the most out of it.
Establish how much waste you have, and what size skip you mean.
Plan where you want the skip sited, but, make sure you consider your options if it is NOT on private property. If this is on your own property, make sure you have enough room for the lorry (remember you need at least 10ft access)
Make sure you know what waste you plan to dispose of and that it is suitable for general waste skips. If you want to dispose of asbestos, please let us know.
Plan when you need the skip for, taking into account any application periods should a road permit be required.
